Thinking about disengagement from the project development phase

It is now recognized and requested that any operational project of a development organization integrate the concept of empowerment. Beyond this requirement, reality tends to show that such a principle is often difficult to operationalize, even forgotten or neglected. In particular, it comes up against divergent temporalities between an often long process of appropriation and projects limited in time. He often faces unpredictable changes in situations in rigorous project planning.

When accepting partnerships or developing our own projects, we pay particular attention to the concept of ownership. It comes in different aspects, at different levels and includes different actors:

  • political / institutional ownership
    • It is essential that the project is part of an asserted and concrete will of the authorities for better care for minors and women in detention.
  • social appropriation
    • It is essential to raise awareness in the community, the families of detained persons, civil society for better care.
  • technical appropriation
    • It is essential to train, give the tools, support and share with supervisory staff.
  • economic appropriation

It is essential to plan with the actors concerned (authorities, partners) for sustainability following our disengagement.

If sustainability should not be a goal in itself and the only criterion for the success of a project, it nevertheless allows us to reflect on the quality of what we do and to remain responsive to the challenges it involves. It forces us to remain attentive to developments on the ground and receptive to the realities of the contexts in order to show a critical spirit towards our action. Regular evaluation processes (internal and external) and capitalization are gradually integrated into our working approach in order to best guarantee the quality of our projects and our action.

Our action

A pragmatic approach, concrete responses to identified needs and the long-term commitment of qualified and recognized local collaborators / partners are among our priorities and our intervention criteria for developing projects.

  • Build together adequate and concrete responses.
  • Encourage the empowerment and empowerment of partners and authorities.
  • Develop South / South and South / North exchanges.
  • Raise awareness of the right to education and its need for the reintegration of minors and women prisoners.
